(The Dance Hall revives a Grange Hall tradition with community contra dance featuring caller Tony Parkes, fiddler Elly Marshall and pianist Abe Stimson.
Born and raised in New York City, Tony learned to call and play piano for square dances at the Farm and Wilderness Camps in Vermont. He studied square and contra calling informally with many of the best-known callers in the Northeast, including Don Durlacher, Dick Kraus, and Ralph Page, and completed the Teaching Techniques Course in international folk dancing with Mary Ann Herman of Folk Dance House.
In 1973 Tony moved to the Boston area to be nearer the center of the New England contra dance revival. He completed the square dance calling course, wiith a focus on timing and phrasing, taught by Dick Leger for the New England Folk Festival Association (NEFFA). Tony has performed at every NEFFA Festival since 1969 and has served on the boards of NEFFA, the Country Dance Society (Boston Centre), and the Folk Arts Center of New England. He currently serves on NEFFA's Grants Committee.
Tony is known for his original dances in the traditional New England style, including Flirtation Reel, Hey Fever, and the modern classic Shadrack's Delight. He is the author of Contra Dance Calling: A Basic Text and two collections of dance material. For over 20 years he appeared weekly with the band Yankee Ingenuity, which he co-founded; he recorded two albums with them, Kitchen Junket and Heatin' Up the Hall. He also played piano on two albums with the Canadian-American fiddler Gerry Robichaud.

And I have just completed two back to back tours of the southeast â calling 18 dances in about 5 weeks. Come see if I have learned anything. I think I have, and I have some great new dances as well.

For the first time, the Dance Gypsy has delivered more than 500,000 query answers within one year.
From October 15, 2010 through October 15, 2011. The dance Gypsy responded to 502,873 queries for information... our greatest year of service so far. This includes request for information about dances (or maps to dances), festivals, musicians, bands, callers and venues (this year we will add organizations)
These queries were made by 79,191 different dancers (actually the measure is 79,191 different computers... so, honestly that estimate is probably probbaly a little high (e.g. if you access from both work and home (are are neither a supporter nor a user-updater) you probably count. as two).
This service was brought to you by the Dance Gypsy with the help of our 215 generous supporters.
Submitted by:
You asked for it... and now you have it: search results organized by distance from your home location.
In the past, search results in the Dance Gypsy were always presented as an alphabetic (by town name) list of events. Now DG supporters have the option of requesting that their results be ordered by the distance from their starting point.
Why the change?
Primarily: because you asked for it. But there are very good reasons for your requests. Alas, while half the readers are probably saying "at last!" ... the other half are asking "Why?"
The alphabetic list has worked fine for those who are used to it, or who routinely use a small geographic search area. And it was well suited to listing within a relatively small geographic area (recall that many years ago, the DG was contained in the state of Vermont). But two changes have conspired to make a distanced-based result more desirable for many dancers:
First, the number of events listed in the Dance Gypsy and their geographic distribution have both increased dramatically. A dancer in San Diego does not want to see all those Boston listings (and vice versa). Listing the closest events first pushes those far-away events to the end of the list.
Second, more and more people are accessing the DG while away from home, using their smart phone, iPads, etc. When you are far from home, you don't know which of those named communities are very close and which are further. What you need is the distance. (The "as the crow flies" distance is also included in the detail section of the listings.)
To order your results by distance, use the the "location section". You can order by distance with or without a maximum distance. You can search based on your current location or any other location.
Finally, note that the primary organization is still 'by date'. Thus, all of today's dances appear before all of tomorrow's, even though they may be further away.

Yes, the Dance Gypsy wants your (old) cell phone
Why?
If you use a mobile device to access the Dance Gypsy, you may have noticed the good and bad news: The good news is that the DG is indeed accessible and readable on mobile devices (and it can even access you current location). The bad news is that it isn't very pretty and can be rather a pain to use things like the drop-down menus.
As more and more people use their mobile devices, it becomes more important to provide a reasonable interface to make their experience more reasonable. But to do that we need development platforms. Without a mobile phone or two to text against, I am really shooting in the dark (I don't even have a serious mobile phone -- where I live the telephone service is so bad it is not worth having one).
What do we need?
I would like to get one each of the major mobile platforms -- at least iPhone and Android... and whatever else. The phones do not need to be new -- they don't even have to work (as a phone), but they must be able to access the internet. Yes, I know the older phones will not reveal full functionality, but they will get me started (besides I doubt you would be willing to give me your brand new iPhone 4 ... but if you recently replaced your iPhone 2 with a newer model, that old one is probably getting lost in the back of your desk drawer.
What's in it for you?
Usually, supporters provide their support to the DG in the form of cash. But a used phone could make a good substitute for could hard cash. Donate an old phone and get the full privileges of other supporters.
Plus of course, you will be helping the Dance Gypsy develop a tool that you just might find very useful. The soon I get an old phone or two, the sooner a better mobile interface will be available.
How to do it:
Just send us your old phone (along with enough information to properly credit your gift) to us at:
The Dance Gypsy
2518 Sunset Lake Rd.
Dummerston, VT 05301
You may email us first if you prefer.
ps You may also want to make suggestions for what you would like to see in a mobile interface.

The Dance Gypsy is now "location-aware". That means that it can automatically (with your permission) detect your current location and use that information for dance searches, mapping and constructing directions to your dances.
This service was motivated by the needs of traveling dancers (Dance Gypsies) so they could easily get information for nearby dances when away from home. But it works on your home computer too.
How do you do this?
Supporters have this capability automatically: simply answer "yes" when your browser asks permission to share your location. Your current location will be displayed and set as the center for your location-dependent event searches.
Where does it work?
While intended for dancers accessing the site with mobile devices, it has had far more testing on full sized computers (without built-in GPS). Why? because that is what we have here. Obviously it is not practical to get phones and pad-computers of all the various kinds. For that we reason we ask that dancers report the success or failure or the service. Yes, even "it worked on my phone" is useful. That is useful when someone else reports a failure on the same model phone. You may inform us at:
thedancegypsy.com@thedancegypsy.com
Location-reporting is known to work using Macintosh or Windows based computers using Firefox, Safari, Opera, Chrome (Google), and Internet Explorer, plus iPhone. You may need a recent version of the browser to succeed. Some browsers (e.g. Safari) also have a setting in preferences to disallow passing location information. If it doesn't work for you make sure location-reporting is allowed.
The Dance Gypsy contains a lot of information so smaller screens may have trouble displaying search results. Again we would appreciate hear what works for you and what doesn't. We will try to extend the usability to as many platforms as possible.
We hope this new service is useful to you

Due to the forecast -- up to 1/4" of ice due to freezing rain -- we are canceling tonight's dance at the Peterborough Town House in New Hampshire. This dance was to be a benefit for Mary DesRosiers who lost her home to a fire in November. The benefit will be rescheduled for another date but in the meantime, plan to attend the Coffee House in Nelson next Sunday and the Lui Collins/Garnet Rogers/Animaterra concert on Saturday, March 19th in Peterborough.

Today, in slightly less than 6 months since announcing the end of formal fund drives, the Dance Gypsy has performed 200,000 searches to help a dancer find nearby dances. That's an average of 1079 search every day!
Those 200,000 searches were performed for 33,000 dancers across the US, Canada, and in, fact around the world. Those searches are currently discovering:
* 5015 individual weekly or monthly events
* representing 457 different dance series
* plus 545 festivals or special events
* happening at 1445 different venues
also
* 629 callers, leaders and teachers
* 1158 musicians
and
* 708 bands
In short, the Dance Gypsy is helping more dancers find more dances than ever before.
And by the way, in those same 6 months, 117 dancers have stepped forward to help our efforts. Although that's only 0.35% of the visitors, it is, nonetheless, the largest number of supporters we have ever had. You can add your support to that growing community at:

Things such as "The wonderland dance is canceled tonight" or "In spite of the weather, we will dance, no matter what". In the next 24 hours, your message will be seem by over 1000 dancers - including dancers who do not usually visit your own website.

No, That's not our age. Today the Dance Gypsy answered its 100,000th query since we announced the end of fund-drives in August. It took 102 days to reach that milestone -- so that's roughly 1000 queries a day.
The Dance Gypsy thanks all of you dancers for your continued support.

Due to another extremely wet summer, parking at the park will be limited to essential vehicles only; performers, staff, vendors and campers. All other vehicles must park at the Vergennes Union High School (map forthcoming) and will be shuttled to the park. Please allow for the extra time it may take. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, but the weather and condition of the park leave us no choice. We are working hard to make this arrangement work as smoothly as possible and ask for your understanding and patience.

Contra dances in NH have been a major casualty of the recent ice storm. The Nelson dance tonight has been cancelled, and so has the Gilmanton dance featuring Swallowtail. Checking to see if a dance is happening tonight is recommended. The organizers may be without power and unable to spread the word about a cancellation themselves.
