The Dance Gypsy
Interpreting the Information in the Festival Planner
Listings
Hopefully most of the information in these listing is self explanatory. But
of course, hoping doesnt make it so. Space considerations and attempts
at uniformity in a non-uniform world occasionally make it difficult. Where there
is doubt, the following guidelines may help:
Event Types:
Most events are open to the public without preregistration. Some events carry
special designation to help indicate the nature of the events.
- Festivals are open to the public, usually one can participate in part or
all of the event. They are seldom package deals, that is the price
includes the music and dancing, but not food or lodging.
- Camps generally have more restrictions than festivals. Typically these include:
a single price includes all food and lodging (although there may be multiple
choices with respect to the level of luxury); preregistration is required
(which may entail intense competition for the few places, in which case, registration
is usually either first come first served or via a lottery); campers must
attend the entire camp, not just a single session.
Price:
- Unless otherwise indicated, the stated price is the full price for non-members
and does not not include any discounts for early registration etc.
- The basic price always includes the dancing. When known, we indicate any
additional services included in the base price such as food or lodging. There
are sometimes alternate price choices. The listed price is usually the basic
(no frills) option for the entire event.
- Many groups have reduced prices for members, seniors, students, families
or even those who arrive or sign up early but we do not presently show
this for most events. (We have recently added the capability to list such
discounts, but haven't actually obtained the info from most dances).
Time:
- Normally multiday events do not include times. The exact details
may vary dramatically but typically they run from early evening of the first
day until early evening of the last day
- Single day events usually include times. Unless otherwise indicated, all
dances start in the PM.
Confirmation:
The Dance Gypsy goes to great effort to verify the information we
print. But the information printed is only as accurate as the information
we receive.
- A dance is normally considered confirmed only if the
Dance Gypsy has received a statement that the event is indeed occurring
this year.
- Dance events scheduled, but not confirmed, will be listed but marked
Unconfirmed for this year. Such dances may very well be
happening we just dont have a confirmed statement to that effect.
Printing:
- Printing via the print button prints only the dance listings,
not the calendar nor the various buttons.
Sponsor:
- Sponsor means the dance or music organization hosting
the event; it does not refer to financial underwriters.
Links to Performers:
- Many dance listings include links to the featured callers, instructors,
musicians, etc. This link does not take you directly to that performers
personal web page. Rather it takes you to the Dance Gypsys
own listing for that person or group. These listings contain whatever information
we have on that performer such as upcoming gigs, and contact information (including
web pages).
Starred listings:
- A star placed before an ad indicates a dance series that supports the
Dance Gypsy. Normally this indicates a paid ad (e.g., like a highlighted
entry in the phone book). In some cases it means that the sponsors of that
dance have helped the Dance Gypsy through other means.
Advertisements:
- Ads interspersed through the listings are available to any dancerelated
organization or individual (and they are cheap). For more information on advertising
in the Dance Gypsy, see the
advertising page.
