You may select events using any combination of dates, locations, distance from home, dance styles and/or event names.

General guidelines:

You need not specify any specific category; but you must indicate at least one search criterion.
Any category you specify will restrict the search to events satisfying that part of the request. For example, if you specify states or regions, you will find only those events in the states you specify.
Once you make a search, your preferences (except for the dates, since they will certainly change) can be remembered for future searches — just select the “remember my values” button at the bottom.
For text specifications, you may specify as many words as you wish, but only those events satisfying all words in your list will be found.
You may specify partial names, in which case the requested words are assumed to be the leading letters of the names or words you are seeking.
Thus, for example, all of the following will find an event in New London
- New York
- York
- New
- N Yor
- N Y
- new york (it doesn't care about case)
but it will not find misspelled names or near misses, thus
- “New yorc” (spelling),
- “New orc” (needs leading letters) will not work
In general you will do better to under-specify rather than over-specify. For example, even a popular specification like:
- Camb
- MA
- August 1 to Aug 31
will find only a couple events — but they will probably both be relevant. On the other hand: “Cambrige” will find none, and “Cambridge” “NH” will find totally different events.

The “event name” field can be used to find a specific festival by name. For example “Champlain Valley Festival”. It is not intended for descriptions such as “The big festival south of Burlington”.

It can also be used to find events with similar names. Thus “dawn” will find several events that call themselves “ Dawn Dance”.

If you leave the field blank or leave the words “Any event name” in the field, no name restrictions will apply.

If you select a time range, only events within the time period you select will be found.

The default when opening a time range is today through one month from today.

If you select “search for any future date” no time restrictions will be used.

If for some reason you want to search for an event in the past, select a time period in the past.

If you specify a homebase and distance, only dances within that distance from you will be found (presently this option does not find Canadian events, nor distances from Canadian homes).

If you select any states or regions, only events in those states will be found (this can be combined with the range value)

If you select a destination town (or partial town name) only that town will be found. “Amherst” will find events in South Amherst but “South Amherst” will not find events in Amherst.

Selecting a destination town without a state will find dances in any town by that name in any state.

Searches for named town will not find nearby towns: (“Boston” will not find Cambridge events), nor misspelled towns. (Also see the general comments above for suggestions on text selections)

You may select “all styles” or specify any set of desired styles.

If you select any dance styles, only events featuring dances of the type(s) you select will be found.

Some events feature many dance styles (with perhaps very little of each, or perhaps changing year to year). The “multiple” style option finds those events.

Even though the Dance Gypsy may know of an event, we do not necessarily know the dance style of the event; this “unknown” option will find events with no style listed.
