The simplest search is the Quicksearch: just select the “Quicksearch” button and then the day you want.

You may also select dances using any combination of dates, locations, distances from home, dance styles and event names.

General guidelines:

You need not specify any specific category; the default search will find all dances anywhere in New England during the upcoming week — typically about 125-150 events.
You will probably want to make some restrictions.
Perhaps the most useful is the —search by distance— option. just specify a town or zip code and a distance — the finder will locate any dances of festivals within the given radius of the desired town.
Unfortunately for the moment it recognizes cities and zip codes only in the US.
Any category you specify will restrict the search to events satisfying that part of the request. For example, if you specify states, you will find only those events in the states you specify.
For text specifications you may specify as many words as you wish, but only those events satisfying all words in your list will be found.
You may specify partial names, in which case the requested words are assumed to be the leading letters of the names or words you are seeking.
Thus, for example, all of the following will find a dance in New London
- New London
- London
- New
- N Lon
- N L
- new london (it doesn't care about case)
but it will not find misspelled names or near misses, thus
- "Gnu london" will not work,
In general you will do better to under-specify rather than over-specify. For example, even a popular specification like:
- Camb
- Eastern Mass
- August 1 to Aug 31
will find only about 10-20 dances — but they will probably all be relevant. On the other hand:
“Cambrige” will find none, nor will “Cambridge”, “Western Mass”.
If you select “remember my selections”, then once you make a search, your preferences (except for the dates, since they will certainly change) will be remembered for future searches (unless you have cookies disabled).
You may tell it to forget your choices at any time.

If you select a date range, only dances within the date period you select will be found.

The default (if you do not select a date range) is today through one week from today.

If you need a calendar to help you visualize, just ask for one. A calendar will appear but it does not contain links to dances. If you want a linked calendar, use the “Quickfind” button.

If you select a home base (town and state or zip), only events within that distance of the home base will be found.

If you select any target states or town, only events in those states and/or town will be found — even if you also specified a distance.

If you select a town (or partial name) only that town will be found. “Amherst” will find events in South Amherst but “South Amherst” will not find events in Amherst.

Specified target town will not find nearby towns: (“Boston” will not find Cambridge events), but the distance search works well for that. (Also see the general comments above for suggestions on text selections)

A search for “Concord” without specifying a state will find dances in any town named “Concord”.

You may select “all styles” or specify any set of desired styles.

If you select one or more dance styles, only dances of the type(s) you select will be found.

Since all dance series have an explicit style, the “unknown styles” option affects special events only.

You may restrict the search to a named series of dances, such as Hartford’s “Always on Sunday” series by writing part of its name.
